About The Team & Role
This is an exciting opportunity to lead on the protection and enhancement of Gloucestershire's unique natural and historic environment. Gloucestershire is due to experience significant growth over the next 15-20 years. This includes the emerging Tewkesbury Garden Communities project, as well as major, strategic infrastructure projects, such as M5 J10 improvements and the A417 ‘Missing Link’, currently under construction. It is therefore essential for this postholder to help ensure that future developments are both sustainable and environmentally acceptable.
As Heritage Team Leader you will lead the County Council's Heritage team, which includes both archaeology and ecology. Managing a dedicated and experienced team of eight professionals (mostly archaeologists with one ecologist) who specialise in the conservation and management of the diverse environment in Gloucestershire. This will include delivering the statutory Historic Environment Record and Local Nature Recovery Strategy for the county, advising on development proposals and other land use change, advising on land management proposals, and initiating/managing other programmes to improve the management of the historic and natural environment in the county.
About you
The successful candidate will use their education and/or industry experience to manage the work of the archaeology team and the small county ecology service, including inputting into Biodiversity Net Gain. The postholder will play a pivotal role in building and nurturing relationships within Gloucestershire and beyond.
Using your excellent communication and interpersonal skills to regularly engage with various stakeholders, including Government departments, national agencies, landowners, developers, other local authorities, county and district councillors, etc. You will promote the service and ensure that all current and emerging statutory requirements are successfully fulfilled.
