Summary

Help us manage Colchester’s rich archaeological heritage

Are you a qualified archaeologist, with experience of providing advice on the implications of development for the archaeological resource, management of the HER and building recording plus bespoke project management?

Do you have the vision and experience we are looking for to ensure that informed decisions are made that deliver dividends for the heritage?

Does the prospect of working in one of England’s fastest growing cities appeal to your passion for stewardship of the heritage resource?

Colchester’s past as Britain’s oldest recorded city, mentioned by Pliny the Elder in AD79, has left an extraordinary wealth of archaeological and standing heritage. This presents a very rare opportunity for you to join us and share the challenge of effectively and sustainably managing the outstanding heritage resource, whilst facilitating growth in our forward looking city.

With a newly adopted local plan and Garden Community agreed to the east of Colchester, we remain committed to ensuring that we create sustainable new places that complement the vibrant historic town and its sensitive landscape setting that includes the Dedham Vale AONB, the Colne and Roman River Valleys and the coast at Mersea Island. There can be few cities with such a diverse offer and potential for professional growth with a rich archaeological resource. You will benefit from working in a team of specialist professionals, whose skills and experience will not just complement yours, but will expand your expertise into all kinds of associated areas, such as the local list and historic building conservation, development management, planning policy and more.

This role requires exceptional archaeological expertise, and someone who is technically knowledgeable in the context of Colchester’s outstanding archaeology moreover a strong and persuasive negotiator, educator, and outstanding passionate advocate for the heritage.  You will also have the ability to build a rapport and excellent working relationship with councillors, developers and community groups, consultees, colleagues and partners.

As the archaeological advisor to the country’s most ancient and fastest growing cities, we also expect you to have an ability to seize the opportunities to advance our understanding of the resource and enrich our HER as they arise through programmes of investigation and recording, and to achieve creative solutions to support one of the most ambitious urban renaissance programmes. Just as importantly, we are also looking for you to be able to bring the ‘right’ attitude to work and to all activities, and interactions with customers. Rather than us spell out what that is in this advert, you will be expected to demonstrate what you can bring.

If you would like to discuss this exciting role further please contact Simon Cairns, Development Manager, on (01206) 508650 or Lucy Mondon, Planning Manager on (01206) 506964.
