Job Description

GUARD Archaeology Limited wish to employ a Post-Excavation Project Manager. The post will be based at our main office in Glasgow and would be involved in projects throughout Scotland. This post is aimed at archaeologists with substantial experience of undertaking post-excavation work, including preparing reports for publication and managing a varied portfolio of post-excavation projects. 

Candidates for this post will be expected to be able to:

  • Prepare tenders for new post-excavation work in concert with Fieldwork Project Managers;
  • Produce quality research designs for post-excavation projects;
  • Provide oversight on all active post-excavation projects, co-ordinating and timetabling post-excavation works for in-house and external specialists in concert with Project Management Team;
  • Undertake project management of contracts from drafting of Post-Excavation Research Designs through post-excavation analyses, publication, submission of project archives to the National Record of the Historic Environment, and reporting of assemblages to the Treasure Trove Unit;
  • Ensure sound academic and professional standards of all aspects of post-excavation work, facilitate smooth operation of contracts and generate additional work;
  • Assist project managers and senior staff in the mentoring of post-excavation staff;
  • Provide support and input to company policies and strategy where necessary;
  • Undertake general office duties as and when requested.

Candidates must have a degree in Archaeology, Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA level), and at least ten years of experience undertaking a variety of post-excavation work. We are primarily interested in candidates with enthusiasm, excellent organisational skills and record keeping, wide knowledge of post-excavation analytical techniques, strong ability in project delivery, a willingness to work on their own and lead small and large teams, and a publication record of their own. Candidates should have a sound knowledge of Scottish archaeology in particular and relevant Legislation and Planning Guidelines, and be computer literate, including Microsoft Office.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership and inter-personal skills, with an aptitude for training and coaching junior members of staff, and engaging with the public.

The post is based on a 35-hour week, includes sick pay and 30 days per year paid leave pro rata (inclusive of Bank Holidays), and is permanent (6-month probationary period).
