Summary

We have a brand new senior opportunity which combines an exciting mix of strategic support for the English archaeological sector and a programme of archaeological excavation fieldwork in support of Historic England`s priorities. You will have a key role in the cross-sector 21st Century Challenges for Archaeology initiative, working with a wide range of archaeological bodies; and you will also help build capacity in the sector through collaboration. You will also lead on or contribute to excavations on important archaeological sites in support of Historic England`s regional priorities and to help research and interpret sites for English Heritage.

What you will be doing:

-You will be part of the Archaeological Excavation Team and act as one of the sector-related leads within the wider multi-disciplinary Archaeological Investigation team. You will work together to cement Historic England`s support for archaeology in England in key strategic priority areas.

-You will nurture and enhance Historic England`s relationship with a wide range of sector organisations by supporting the NSSD Director and Head of Archaeological Investigation in managing major cross-sector strategic programmes aimed at increasing the public value of archaeology.

-In close collaboration with Head of Archaeological Excavation, you will also maintain an existing high level of practical expertise by managing, undertaking and/or participating in priority excavation fieldwork projects in support of casework related to planning, Listing and Heritage at Risk; and in support of English Heritage Trust research programmes.

Who we are looking for:

-Significant experience as a senior practitioner in archaeology and proven ability to successfully project-manage complex, interdisciplinary excavation projects under pressure.

-Proven track record of programme management.

-Strong influencing and negotiating skills, including an ability to think quickly and mediate complex issues and problems in challenging circumstances

-Ability to communicate persuasively with colleagues and a diversity of external partners, both verbally and in writing, in a manner which instils and inspires confidence.

-Ability and willingness to challenge established priorities, practices, and structure.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance. We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the county and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.

We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for everyone. Diversity helps us to perform better and attract more people to support our work. We welcome and encourage job applications from people of all backgrounds.

We particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates and candidates with disabilities as they are underrepresented within Historic England at this level.
