Job Description

GUARD Archaeology Limited wish to employ a Senior Project Manager. The post will be based at our main office in Glasgow and involved in projects throughout Scotland. This post is aimed at archaeologists with substantial experience of undertaking major fieldwork projects and managing a varied portfolio of excavations, evaluations, watching briefs, metal detecting surveys and historic building recording surveys. Experience of managing other Project Managers will be seen as an advantage.

Candidates for this post will be expected to be able to:

  • Prepare tenders for new fieldwork;
  • Produce Method Statements and Written Schemes of Investigation for fieldwork projects;
  • Provide oversight on active fieldwork projects, co-ordinating and timetabling fieldwork and reporting in concert with other member of the Project Management Team;
  • Undertake project management of major contracts from drafting of Method Statements and Written Schemes of Investigation through fieldwork, Data Structure Reports, to the drafting of Post-Excavation Research Designs;
  • Ensure sound academic and professional standards of all aspects of fieldwork, facilitate smooth operation of contracts and generate additional work;
  • Manage junior project managers workload and assist in the delivery of company goals;
  • Assist project managers and senior staff in the mentoring of field staff;
  • Provide support and input to company policies and strategy where necessary;
  • Undertake general office duties as and when requested.

Candidates must have a degree in Archaeology, Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA level), and at least ten years of experience of archaeological fieldwork. We are interested in candidates with excellent organisational skills and record keeping, wide knowledge of fieldwork techniques, strong ability in project delivery, a willingness to work on their own and lead small and large teams, and a publication record of their own. Candidates should have a sound knowledge of Scottish archaeology and relevant Legislation and Planning Guidelines, and be computer literate, including Microsoft Office. The ideal candidate will possess excellent leadership and inter-personal skills, with an aptitude for training and coaching junior members of staff, and engaging with the public.

The post is based on a 35-hour week, includes sick pay and 30 days per year paid leave pro rata (inclusive of Bank Holidays), and is permanent (6-month probationary period).
