About ASE

Archaeology South-East is part of UCL – a global multidisciplinary university with a diverse community and progressive approach to teaching and research. As part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology, research and learning are at our core - and we want you to work with us to continue delivering on this mission.

We take pride in delivering high quality project outcomes for our clients, working hard to maximise research and public benefit from development-led fieldwork. We work for a range of people supporting development and infrastructure projects as well as heritage management. Our large team provides a comprehensive range of services and areas of specialist expertise, so there are plenty of people to learn from as your career in archaeology progresses.

About the role

ASE wishes to recruit a trainee in Roman pottery to join our large team of post-excavation specialists based in Portslade, near Brighton.

Working with our experienced in-house pottery specialists, the successful candidate will undertake a structured and supervised training programme, learning how to identify and record Roman pottery, predominately working on assemblages from south-east and eastern England. Training will be provided in the full range of skills and knowledge needed to carry out specialist tasks and these will be introduced over a period of time to allow for the development of sound skills and competencies.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable interest in Roman pottery and may already have some experience of working with archaeological finds. You are likely to be educated to degree level in archaeology (or related subject) and have a good working knowledge of British archaeology. Candidates should be proficient in the use of MS Office and able to demonstrate a methodical approach to the handling and processing of data. Candidates should be open to training and have a willingness to learn. They should also be committed to UCL's policy of equal opportunity and be able to work as part of a diverse team.

Please provide a clear statement in response to each of the selection criteria, which shows how your qualifications, experience and training to date fit each of them. Please provide one or two sentences addressing each criterion (it is expected that more detailed evidence will be available in your CV). It would be very helpful if you could order this statement in line with the selection criteria in the “Person Specification” at the end of the Job description. Your responses to all the selection criteria form an essential part of the selection process and a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as 'Please see attached CV' will not be considered acceptable.
