Based on the outcome of the government's COBRA meeting about COVID-19 on Monday, 16 March 2020, we are sorry to say the CIfA2020 conference was postponed. We have contacted any individuals or organisations who made bookings for the 2020 conference. Thank you for your patience in this challenging time. Please do your best to keep yourselves and your communities safe. For further advice and information regarding COVID-19, please visit https://www.archaeologists.net/practices/coronavirus.
Our conference is the premier professional archaeological conference in the UK, attracting hundreds of participants over three days. Combining keynote addresses, wide-ranging sessions, training workshops and exhibitions, the CIfA conference and training event provides an annual forum for discussing current professional issues, showcasing new developments and presenting research in archaeology and the wider heritage sector. The conference usually takes place in April and moves around the UK on an annual basis.
CIfA2020 Promoting our profession
CANCELLED (22-24 April 2020, Apex City of Bath Hotel, Bath)
Sponsored by Towergate Insurance.
Theme
At CIfA2020 we will be looking to the future and asking what more can we do to promote the profession and our professionalism. Over the last decade we have defined new entry routes into archaeology and set out the career structures and competence requirements for professional archaeologists, but how can we maximise these to attract new, and diverse, talent and promote the value and quality of the work we do? Where can we further develop and reinforce the standards and good practice championed by the Institute to ensure we consistently understand and meet our professional obligation to deliver public benefit? And how, as a profession, can we better equip ourselves with the ethical and professional knowledge, skills and behaviours required in a changing, and challenging, environment? None of these are new concepts, but ones that we must all engage with.

Bursaries
In 2020 there was to be three opportunities to apply for bursaries to help with the cost of attending Conference:
- Hal Dalwood Trust Conference Bursary - The Hal Dalwood Trust Fund has been set up to provide an annual bursary to enable an early career archaeologist of any age to attend the CIfA conference. Contributions to the fund have also been made by several CIfA members and other archaeologists. Please complete the Hal Dalwood bursary request form and send it to conference@archaeologists.net to be considered.
- We are pleased to be introducing the Theresa O'Mahoney Memorial Conference Bursary in partnership with the Enabled Archaeology Foundation (EAF) and British Archaeological Jobs and Resources (BAJR). The bursary will aim to cover conference attendance, travel (usually within the UK) and accommodation for a professional dis/Abled archaeologist. It can also be extended to contribute towards the travel and accommodation for a carer. Please complete the Theresa O'Mahoney bursary request form and send it to conference@archaeologists.net to be considered.
- CIfA’s conference bursary scheme offers assistance to help with fees, childcare costs, or travel bursaries for members who are students, unemployed or on a low income. Please complete the CIfA bursary request form and send it to conference@archaeologists.net to be considered.
Special thanks to MSDS Marine for sponsoring an additional student placement within the CIfA bursary pot!
Accommodation
Bath is a popular destination and prices can increase dramatically as the city gets busy in the springtime. We encourage all conference attendees to book their accommodation well in advance.
We have been provided a custom accommodation booking portal by Visit Bath. This includes a wide range of hotel options, but is by no means exclusive. Bath is also home to a Travelodge, Premier Inn, as well as other budget and independent hotels, some of which may not come up on Booking.com or other sites.
Getting to Bath
Great Western Railway offers fixed ticket prices within its network for conference attendees, even during peak times. Visit www.GWR.com/conference and click on Bath to book your ticket. Please note: you will need proof of your conference registration on the train for this fare to be honoured. Outbound tickets will be fixed, times and dates cannot change, return tickets are fully flexible.
Note: this fare offers the best savings when travelling from London to Bath, but could provide a helpful discount along other routes.
Sponsor, exhibit, advertise
We have a variety of sponsorship, exhibition and promotion opportunities at the conference. Please find our conference brochure, including a listing of all available opportunities. Completed booking forms and all questions or concerns can be sent to conference@archaeologists.net.
Conference social programme
In addition to our educational programme, CIfA2020 will also host an evening social programme. This is additional to the cost of registration. Please visit our social programme page for further information.
Harassment-free conference
CIfA2020 is committed to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone. Please see our policy statements as well as BAJR's respect guide. To report harassment on-site, please contact Alex Llewellyn or Elizabeth Durst at the registration desk or via email at admin@archaeologists.net.
