The Historic Environment Service (HES) of the South West Heritage Trust delivers archaeological planning advice to Somerset County Council and four District Councils in Somerset and also Bath and North East Somerset Council. It is responsible for the management and curation of both the Somerset and BaNES HERs. The HES offers historic environment advice to a range of other agencies and bodies such as Natural England, the Environment Agency and Water companies. The HES has an active programme of outreach and fieldwork projects linked to Heritage Lottery Funded projects and planning casework notably the Hinkley Point power station project and infrastructure projects such as the A303 improvements in Somerset. The service also offers conservation advice, monument management schemes and carries out small scale enhancement works and archaeological research projects working with local community groups and volunteers.
