Summary
Heneb: The Trust for Welsh Archaeology is a new national organisation with deep regional roots. Based in Bangor in beautiful north-west Wales, the Gwynedd branch is one of four regional offices who together provide a comprehensive archaeological service throughout Wales. Heneb is both a limited company and a Registered Charity, the object of which is to enhance the education of the public in archaeology. It is an independent organisation dedicated to conserving, investigating, recording, understanding, and promoting the archaeology and historic environment of Wales. Heneb is a Registered Organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.
We are looking for an experienced archaeologist to join our north-west Wales Advisory Services section. The section is supported by Welsh Government through Cadw and by the four local planning authorities in the region, to act as the archaeological planning and heritage management advisors for the local planning authorities.
The position
As part of a small team, you will play a key role in ensuring the effective management and promotion of the historic environment of north-west Wales. It is a challenging and varied role in an area renowned for the wealth and diversity of its archaeology. The day-to-day work principally involves providing advice at a casework level: reviewing proposals for building or land use change, both within and outside the planning system and other regulatory regimes, with reference to relevant planning and legislation, and a wide range of information resources. You will be responsible for identifying circumstances where archaeological interventions are appropriate, setting the scope of the archaeological response required, monitoring the subsequent work and ensuring that professional standards are maintained through to completion.
The post holder
We welcome applications from archaeologists looking to move into or progress a career in curatorial archaeology. We expect candidates to have experience of working within a professional archaeological environment and an understanding of the regulatory frameworks within which development-led archaeology is undertaken in the UK. Although you may have previous advisory or consultancy experience, a background in archaeological fieldwork would also be relevant. The successful candidate will display the right aptitude and attitude and will be supported by our friendly and professional team as they develop in the role.
You will need to have a good working knowledge of MS Office and GIS software applications and must have a full driving licence, to enable travel to site visits and other meetings. As many people in the region speak Welsh as a first language, a knowledge and appreciation of Welsh language and culture is highly desirable.
