Summary

Summary

Under the Care of Cathedrals Measure 2011, and following the retirement of the post holder, we are looking to appoint a Cathedral Archaeologist to act as the professional advisor to act strategically on all matters for which the Chapter has statutory and non-statutory archaeological responsibility. This includes responding to specific proposals for works recommended by the Cathedral Architect and approved by the Cathedral.

The Cathedral building reflects the rich evolution of church building over nearly 850 years from its humble beginnings in 1180 to the C20th Nave, begun in the 1930s and completed in 1991.

We will celebrate our centenary in 1927 alongside that of both the City and Diocese and the Archaeologist will play a critically important role in ensuring the conservation of our history as we prepare to serve our community for the next 100 years.

Attendance

You will need to be able to attend meetings of the Fabric Advisory Committee (currently three a year) either in-person on online. There will also be some ‘unscheduled/ad hoc’ days and visits for project or specialist advice meetings as well as remote ad-hoc advice and support.

The appointment is subject to retender every five years and is made ad personam. People who are already employed are welcome to apply but they must be able to deliver the required services without constraint.

The post holder

You will hold a graduate or post-graduate qualification in archaeology or equivalent experience and be a member of the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists.
