Summary

Oxford Archaeology is one of the largest independent archaeological practices in Europe. Our size and reputation ensure that we work on the most exciting and varied projects and can offer real opportunities for long-term employment and career development. We have offices in Cambridge, Lancaster and Oxford and are a registered heritage charity.

Oxford Archaeology is at the forefront of training the next generation of archaeologists. We have recently launched our new Fieldwork Training Pathways; you will be enrolled on the Fieldwork Assistant Supervisor Training Pathway. For more information see here

Our Oxford and Cambridge offices have a busy and exciting programme of fieldwork across southern England and the Midlands. The Cambridge programme includes excavating a large Roman settlement in Cambridgeshire, evaluation of deep-fen deposits in Lincolnshire and some large scale excavations in Essex and Suffolk. The Oxford programme includes the excavation of prehistoric and Roman settlements both within and adjacent to the County and work within several Oxford colleges. Both the Cambridge and Oxford programmes include the excavation of prehistoric monuments and medieval settlements on the Suffolk coast.

Our Lancaster office is currently involved in various projects including large-scale excavations along the route of the A66 Penrith and Brough, just outside Cumbria's Lake District National Park. The A66 follows the line of a Roman road across the Pennines which is punctuated by Roman forts. The Roman road traversed a natural pass thought to have been used by prehistoric communities, particularly in the exchange of Neolithic stone axes produced in the central Lake District fells. The A66 project will amount to numerous open area excavations of multi-period sites (including Roman vicus and cemetery), planned to run throughout 2025 and into 2026. In addition, there are potential opportunities for further work across northern England.

For away based work (eg. the A66), accommodation will be provided in addition to our usual range of benefits listed below.

Position:

As you progress through the programme you will also be given the opportunity to undertake external training courses including plant supervision (NPORS), CAT and Genny, First Aid at Work and Site Supervisors Safety Training (SSSTS).
