Job Description:
Red River Archaeology Group are currently recruiting for a flexible, driven and innovative Project Officer to join the team. The successful candidate will ensure best archaeological practice in fieldwork and post-excavation; assessing the logistical requirements of their part of the site/project and ensuring that they are met; assessing the personnel requirements of their part of the site/project and ensuring that they are met; liaising with clients, representatives of statutory bodies and local authorities, and communicating the Project Manager’s instructions regarding on-site procedure to Site Supervisors, Site Assistants, and General Operatives. The Project Officer will also be required to undertake certain post-excavation duties concerned with the production and delivery of site reports.
We are seeking candidates who can showcase a diverse skill set, including proficiency in the excavation and post-excavation processes. An in-depth understanding of Scottish archaeology, coupled with comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and frameworks, is essential. Experience is a prerequisite, but training and mentorship can be provided in this regard if a candidate can demonstrate an interest/aptitude for this type of work.
Summary of essential job functions
- Fieldwork (including, but not limited to)
- Ensuring adequate on-site staffing levels and liaising with the Project Manager to that end
- Staff orientation and on-site training/instruction
- Ensuring the observance of disciplinary codes of conduct and reporting to the Project Manager on such matters
- Ensuring that all Health & Safety and Waste Management policies are implemented and adhered to, and liaising with the Project Manager to that end
- Submitting all information necessary to complete staff timesheets, leave request forms, illness certificates to the Project Manager,
- Ensuring that their project has adequate equipment, tools, resources etc
- Ensuring that best archaeological practice is followed at all times, within the terms of RRA’s excavation manual
- Assisting the Project Manager in devising and implementing strategies to ensure the excavation of sites to the above standards whilst remaining within budget and on schedule, and amending those strategies if required
- Implementing the instructions of the Project Manager regarding excavation strategies to ensure completion of the project on schedule and within budget
- Ensuring that all site staff under their supervision are performing tasks appropriate to their grade
- Ensuring that all site staff under their supervision are performing tasks to the best of their ability
- Ensuring that the Site Archive is complete and maintained to the highest possible standards
- Ensuring that adequate records are kept of Health & Safety and disciplinary issues and that these records are communicated to the Project Manager
- Ensuring that adequate records are kept of all machinery used on site, and the hours in which it was active
- Undertaking archaeological monitoring of construction/demolition works as required
- Post-excavation (including, but not limited to)
- Contributing to the production and delivery of reports to the required standards of RRA, and to the satisfaction of the Project Manager
- The timely and efficient completion of post-excavation tasks as assigned by the Project Manager
- Ensuring the timely and efficient completion of post-excavation tasks as assigned to subordinates
- The fulfilment of post-excavation milestones and deadlines as defined by the Project Manager
- Ensuring that all parties involved in the report production process are kept adequately informed of the requirements of the Project Manager regarding the delivery of reports

Skills and Qualifications
- Excellent communication (oral and written) skills

Hours and location:
The standard hours will be 40 hours per week, based on a 7.5 hour working day with an additional paid 30 min break for lunch, Monday to Friday.
This role will be based in our Scottish office however some home/hybrid working that can be facilitated if needed.
