The biggest archaeological programme in Europe is now under way and is being driven by the construction and development of HS2.
There are already 60 sites of archaeological interest along the HS2 phase 1 route, including major sites at Euston, Stoke Mandeville and at the Park Street site in central Birmingham. The scale of this opportunity should not be underestimated.
HS2 is engaging with CIfA and our membership to ensure that findings from this massive archaeology programme are revealed in a way that maximises public engagement and knowledge sharing.
We will also work closely with HS2 on capacity building and legacy benefits such as addressing the skills shortage in archaeology. For example, there are currently 10, 6-week paid internships at the Birmingham end of the scheme.
HS2 understand that archaeology adds value to industry and to society and that championing professionalism in archaeology will improve standards, promote best practices and attract new people into archaeology.
We fully support HS2 in their commitment to best practice in archaeology and in maximising the benefits the archaeology programme will bring to society.
