Proposed cuts to archaeology funding cancelled

CIfA and others campaigned to overturn a proposal to cut the Strategic Priorities Grant to Archaeology courses in English Universities. While the cuts to other subjects will go through as planned, Gavin Williamson (Secretary of State for Education) has written to the Office of Students saying Having considered the consultation responses and the issues they highlighted, I have concluded that archaeology should be included within the OfS’s Price Group C1.1 subject list.

This decision recognises the value and importance of archaeology and the costs of classroom, lab and fieldwork teaching, and  maintains archaeology in the top tier of funding alongside medical, engineering, IT and science subjects.
