Environments of Equity, Climates of Work

This is a call for participants in a standard paper session at the 44th annual meeting of the Theoretical Archaeology Group (TAG44) set to be held at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, on Monday 18 – Wednesday 20 December 2023. The conference theme is Climate Archaeology: Temporalities and Ontologies.
While many archaeology conferences are turning their attention to the climate, this session aims to keep equity, diversity and inclusivity (E,D&I) on the agenda. It recognises the needs for those engaged in E,D&I to connect with each other and compare notes. The session thus seeks speakers to address the current status of work on E,D&I across the sector, including commercial archaeology, universities, museums and national cultural institutions. The ultimate goal is to enable E,D&I leads to refine their work toward making meaningful, concrete changes that result in greater inclusivity and equity for disabled, underrepresented and marginalised people. It particularly encourages participation from those with lived experience of disability or minority representation in the fields.
Papers may centre on projects, work or issues relating to gender (e.g. Athena SWAN), decolonising, disability, neurodiversity, race or ethnicity and address any of the following, or other related questions:
- What results and outcomes are there from recent projects undertaken in your institutions, e.g. surveys or other participant research, or community projects?
- What kind of data is being sought and what methods of research are being employed to gather data?
- What has resulted in meaningful actions that have had or promise to have concrete impacts on recruitment, culture and progression of staff?
- What projects are tackling recruitment into archaeology, either commercial or academic?
- What is working and what is not working, and why?
Ten papers of 10 minutes each are sought, with 10 minutes allotted for questions and discussion following each paper. There will be time for an overall discussion at the end of the session to confer on next steps and potential solutions to problems.
