This Toolkit is intended for use when recording finds during processing. More detailed records will be created during appraisal and analysis, by specialists who should follow specific standards and guidance for individual material or object types (see References and resources).
The hierarchical structure of the Materials Word List allows for the introduction of more detailed terms and will enable the compilation of the material archive (eg when packing and ordering boxes of finds) after appraisal and analysis have been completed. The primary finds record will therefore retain its importance and usefulness and should be updated if re-identifications occur during specialist work.
