Wells Cathedral is seeking a Cathedral Archaeologist to take up post in time for the next phase of works to the West Front commencing after Easter 2025.  The successful candidate will work for the Cathedral as part of the team which cares for the fabric of the cathedral and its precinct. 

Responsibilities include advising the Chapter on archaeological policy and offering advice upon the archaeological implications of any works recommended by the Cathedral Architect or the Superintendent of the Works; following the guidelines produced by the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England (CFCE) with regard to archaeological process – particularly providing the brief for any programme of archaeological work, including a statement of the aims and objectives of the work; and liaising with staff and external bodies as appropriate. 

The retainer of £3,000 per annum will be to cover:

  • Fabric Advisory Committee (FAC) meetings: x 3 per annum
  • Regular site visits: these have tied in with FAC meetings in the past
  • The production of annual reports: x 1 per annum
  • General advice: ad-hoc pre-project advice

Applications are welcomed from those with a post graduate degree in archaeology or a closely related discipline, and considerable proven experience in the study of and understanding of historic buildings, monuments and archaeological sites, in particular with regard to those aspects relating to the archaeology of churches and cathedrals. 

The post is structured around the standard activities defined in the CFCE guidelines, including attendance at the Cathedral’s Fabric Advisory Committee meetings, for which a retainer will be paid.  The level of retainer and rates for other activities will be agreed with the successful candidate.
