I graduated with a degree in archaeology from the University of Chester in 2021, in which I had focused heavily on heritage management. In 2022, I started a six-month apprenticeship as a Trainee Historic Environment Researcher – my foot in the door to commercial archaeology. After my apprenticeship I became a desk-based assessment writer and in late 2024, I joined Headland Archaeology on a graduate scheme. I completed this in 2025 and was promoted to an Archaeological and Built Heritage Consultant. I am also a casual museum assistant with Cheshire West and Chester Museums on weekends.
I joined CIfA as I wanted to be a recognised member of the archaeology industry and to continue to progress in my career. Headland Archaeology is a CIfA Registered Organisation, and I wanted to represent my company and the team’s commitment to professionalism.
My simple advice to those applying: don’t overthink it – you are far more competent than you believe!
