£39,521– £54,000 per annum (37.5 hrs – pay award pending) depending on experience. This is a permanent position, subject to a qualifying probationary period.
Location
The post will be based at the Trust’s Head Office in Canterbury, though travel to sites across Kent and further afield will be required as an integral part of the role.

Summary

Canterbury Archaeological Trust is seeking to employ a Head of Business Development to develop and implement strategies for winning business. The role will involve identifying new business opportunities, developing partnerships and increasing revenue through archaeological project contracts.

Working in close collaboration with other members of the Senior Management Team, the postholder will ensure CAT’s policies for Business Development are integrated across the organisation, developing, implementing and reviewing the effectiveness of its marketing and networking strategies. 

Canterbury Archaeological Trust employs a large full-time team of archaeologists and specialist staff, mostly based out of our Canterbury head office. It is one of the UK’s longest established commercial contracting organisations having been founded in 1975. The Trust is also a registered charity with an enviable record for community archaeology, academic and grant-funded research. The Trust operates throughout the UK.

The role

  • To develop and implement strategies for winning business from target clients.
  • To develop and assist with the implementation of strategies for retaining and enhancing existing clients and other key commercial relationships.
  • The production of policy documents and reports and the provision of input into the strategic development of the organisation.
  • To actively research new opportunities and take a proactive role in the identification and management of opportunities and ‘leads’.
  • To prepare, implement and monitor the effectiveness of CAT’s strategy for engaging potential clients at networking and other business events; representing the organisation at such events when appropriate.   
  • To oversee and manage the development and use of CAT’s client database.
  • To work in close consultation with the Head of Engagement and Marketing, to ensure the effectiveness of CAT’s marketing strategy in developing business opportunities.
  • To maintain oversight of CAT’s policies, compliance accreditations (professional, business, H&S etc.), renewals and other documentation, to help ensure they are maintained and developed to the benefit of the business.
  • To hold regular meetings with the Director and other senior members of staff to ensure strategies for Business Development are coordinated across the organisation.

 

Essential requirement

  • An understanding of, and experience within, the archaeology and heritage business sector, or experience of a similar industry.
  • Significant and relevant business experience.
  • Ability to network and engage positively with a range of clients.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, to use own initiative and to prepare and submit materials to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate others.
  • Ability to prepare reports, financial summaries and other technical documentation as required.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training in business development and marketing.
  • Commitment to adhere to all relevant CAT Health and Safety policies and procedures, and to lead others in adherence and implementation.
