I started my archaeology career volunteering and working on short contract excavations across Europe before moving to England, where I joined commercial archaeology as a field archaeologist on large infrastructure and energy projects. Since then, I’ve worked across the country on a wide range of sites, progressing into supervisory roles and more recently into consultancy and Archaeological Clerk of Works positions.

Working in different regions taught me a lot about the UK’s archaeological diversity — but it’s the friendships formed across sites and counties that have made the job so rewarding.

I applied for ACIfA to gain formal recognition of my experience and to support my move into senior roles focused on leadership, innovation, and risk management. The process encouraged me to reflect on my career through the lens of the CIfA Competency Matrix. It helped me realise how many core fieldwork tasks — decision-making on site, recording strategies, liaising with specialists, and mentoring newer staff — already demonstrate professional standards.

I’ve also been active within CIfA Special Interest Groups, particularly the Diggers’ Forum, where I now serve as Chair. We’re keen to strengthen our online presence, support early-career archaeologists, and continue advocating for those working in the field.

If you’re thinking about applying for ACIfA, my main advice is: don’t underestimate the value of your field experience. Your practical skills, judgement, and leadership on site are exactly what CIfA is looking for — even if they’ve felt like “just part of the job.” Taking time to reflect and write it all down is worthwhile, and it can really highlight how far you’ve come.
