Role Summary 

The Project Officer will support the delivery of Heneb’s archaeological services in South Wales and will report to our Senior Manager (South Wales). The post holder will have responsibility for small to medium sized projects, at times supervising a team of archaeologists, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high professional standard. This role is suited to an experienced archaeologist with occasional responsibility for managing projects, while continuing to contribute directly to fieldwork and reporting.

Main Duties 

  • Supervise and coordinate archaeological fieldwork, ensuring projects are delivered to scope, schedule, and budget. 
  • Contribute to the preparation of project designs, risk assessments, and method statements as required by the Project Manager.
  • Undertake archaeological fieldwork, including excavations, evaluations, watching briefs, survey work and building recording. 
  • Contribute to desk-based assessments and other technical documents. 
  • Undertake post-fieldwork analysis, reporting and publication to a professional standard. 
  • Contribute to the dissemination of project results through publications, talks, or public engagement activities as required by the Project Manager. 
  • Ensure that all work meets Heneb’s quality standards and professional guidelines. 
  • Take responsibility for on-site Health & Safety, ensuring safe systems of work are in place and adhered to. 
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, curatorial archaeologists and stakeholders, representing Heneb professionally. 
  • Carry out other duties as required by the Senior Manager (South Wales).  

Person Specification Essential:  

  • Degree or equivalent in archaeology or a related discipline. 
  • Demonstrable experience in commercial archaeology, including supervising archaeological fieldwork including excavation, survey work and building recording. 
  • Experience of report writing to a professional standard. 
  • Good IT skills 
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage time and resources effectively. 
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements in archaeological fieldwork. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Good understanding of British archaeology and professional standards (e.g. CIfA). 
  • Full, current driving licence. 
  • Associate of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (or working towards it). 

Person Specification Desirable:  

  • Knowledge of archaeology in Wales, relevant legislation, and heritage frameworks. 
  • Experience of liaising with clients, contractors, and curatorial archaeologists. 
  • Evidence of contributing to publications, talks, or wider dissemination of archaeological results. 
  • Health and safety and First-Aid certification. 
  • Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.

Additional Information 

This role requires occasional away work. 

This role requires frequent travel in and around South Wales, with occasional travel to other parts of Wales.
