In 2022 CIfA launched the new online resource Toolkit for Finds Reporting: Roman Coinage - the nationally recognised guide for anyone engaged in the planning, commissioning, production or monitoring of a specialist report on Roman coins. The Toolkit is designed to be used for the reporting of Roman coin finds from all types of archaeological projects (surface collection, watching briefs, evaluations and full-scale excavations) and at all stages of a project’s life cycle (from initiation and planning to the preparation of archive reports and publications).

A follow-up proposal to support the enhancement of the Toolkit was approved by Historic England in 2024 and with the specialist input of Peter Guest, Vianova Archaeology, James Sherwood, excel4business and Emily Johnson, Archaeology South-East (UCL Institute of Archaeology), the newly updated and extensively revised version of the Toolkit is now complete and can be accessed here https://www.archaeologists.net/work/toolkits/roman-coinage/introduction

A unique and innovative feature of the Toolkit is the downloadable Roman Coin Recording Template; which represents the first time a resource like this has been developed for an archaeological artefact. The newly updated Template is now even more comprehensive and sits alongside new features including a short introductory video that provides an overview of the Toolkit’s resources, a downloadable pdf document containing all of the Toolkit’s guidance, and a detailed new FAQ section

Jen Parker Wooding, CIfA’s Interim Head of Professional Standards states,

“CIfA are pleased to launch the updated Toolkit for Finds: Roman Coinage; a unique resource and the first of its type developed for an archaeological artefact. We’re grateful for the continued support of Historic England, especially for the initial development and recent update of the Toolkit, and for the specialist input and expertise of Peter Guest, Vianova Archaeology (Toolkit content developer), James Sherwood, excel4business (coding specialist) and Emily Johnson, ASE/UCL (project support and video editing). The Toolkits (we currently have seven) are proving to be a great way of sharing good practice guidance and resources to support archaeologists working across the historic environment sector.”
