Gregg Griffin, Chair of CIfA's Advisory Council

Who am I? Hi everyone! I’m Gregg Griffin, an Archaeological Consultant with AtkinsRéalis, where I work contributing to railway, highway, and wider infrastructure projects. I’ve been part of CIfA’s Advisory Council for several years, and I’m proud to now be serving as its Chair.

What I do as Chair? I help bring together perspectives from across the archaeological sector to support informed and practical advice to CIfA’s Board of Directors. I manage the functioning of the Advisory Council — chairing meetings, facilitating discussion, and making sure every voice is heard and decisions are clear.

I also look after the administrative tasks that keep our work running smoothly, acting as a bridge between CIfA’s Board of Directors, Staff Team, the Advisory Council, and the wider membership. My aim is to make sure priorities, concerns, and outcomes are communicated clearly and effectively in all directions.

Why the Advisory Council matters? The Advisory Council is where archaeologists from different backgrounds and specialisms can help shape how our profession grows by providing insights and feedback to the Board of Directors. It ensures that CIfA’s work, from policy to guidance to professional standards, reflects real experiences from across the sector and supports strong, ethical, and effective practice.

Why I got involved? I joined the Advisory Council to broaden my understanding of the discipline and to share insights from my own experiences as an archaeologist and what I’ve learned throughout my career. I wanted to challenge myself, use my voice to represent colleagues across the membership, and play an active role in guiding how archaeology evolves over the coming years.

Listening to members and raising their concerns clearly and constructively is something I take seriously, and I’m committed to helping ensure those concerns are heard and acted upon wherever possible.

Why I chose to join CIfA and what does CIfA membership mean to me? I strongly believe in the value of a collaborative and professional community that represents a commitment to high standards, ethical practice, and continual growth within the discipline. Being a CIfA member means standing alongside colleagues who want to improve not only their own work, but archaeology as a whole. It gives me the opportunity to contribute to positive change, stay connected with developments across the sector, and support a shared vision for a stronger and more respected archaeological practice. Membership isn’t just a credential — it’s a way of being actively involved in shaping the future of the discipline I care deeply about.

Always happy to talk! If you’d like to know more about the Advisory Council or want to chat about getting involved, I’m always happy to connect: greggory.griffin@atkinsrealis.com
