About Heneb - The Trust for Welsh Archaeology

Heneb is a charitable organisation committed to preserving and promoting Wales' rich archaeological heritage. As part of our ongoing commitment to education, engagement and the diverse communities we serve, we are seeking a dedicated and highly motivated outreach officer for the southeast of Wales.

Job Purpose

The officer will work as part of the national outreach team to develop and curate learning and outreach resources, and will be responsible for engaging the individuals, communities and organisations of southeast Wales with archaeology and the wider work of Heneb through identifying and delivering meaningful participation opportunities which align with Welsh Government priorities and national wellbeing targets.

The officer will undertake a range of activities, which may include supporting Trust staff at archaeological excavations, co-ordinating volunteers and work experience students, sharing project information with the public via visual displays, handling collections and social media, independently delivering activities and workshops at events such as conferences, lectures, walks and talks, festivals, heritage open days and delivering general outreach both online and in-person.

The officer will work in collaboration with the national outreach team to establish and strengthen relationships with the heritage, archaeology and wellbeing sector, identifying partnership opportunities and sharing ideas for commercial outreach growth, contributing to the overall sustainability of Heneb’s outreach offer.

Key Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement and Delivery

  • Maintain and develop relationships with individuals, communities, organisations and (occasionally) with commercial contractors.
  • Utilise a range of engagement techniques to reach a wide audience.
  • Stay informed about outreach best-practice to develop and deliver inclusive, exciting, sector-leading archaeological opportunities to a wide range of people.
  • Generate engaging media content to promote the work of Heneb.

Strategy and Planning

  • Work with the National Lead for Outreach and the wider outreach team to develop new and engaging activities which promote and advocate for archaeology, align with Welsh Government priorities and support national wellbeing targets.
  • Work with Trust staff to share ideas and identify opportunities for enhanced outreach.
  • Meet regularly with the outreach team to optimise scheduling and support members in other regions when needed.

Reporting and Administration

  • Maintain accurate digital records of outreach activities.
  • Provide regular informal updates on engagement, challenges, and opportunities in team meetings.
  • Produce formal quarterly reports for the southeast region to keep Heneb’s leadership team and primary funder, Cadw, informed of progress and activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Heneb’s policies, relevant industry standards and legislation in all activities including compliance with GDPR, the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists Code of Best Practice and other sector, wellbeing and funder guidance.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience in outreach delivery, preferably within the heritage, archaeology, or museums sector.
  • Demonstrable track record of successful stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong understanding of the archaeology sector and its role in fostering health and wellbeing.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders both online and in-person.
  • Impeccable time management, with the ability to work confidently both with individuals and with large busy groups to deliver hands-on engagement activities.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience working within heritage, archaeology or museums.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Experience developing and delivering large and small-scale participatory events such as workshops and conferences.
  • Relevant degree in heritage, archaeology, or a related field.
  • Ability to speak Welsh.
  • Driving licence.

Key Competencies

  • Creative, energetic, dynamic and inclusive.
  • Communicative, honest and open-minded.
  • Highly motivated, with a make-a-difference attitude and the ability to engage people through story-telling, crafts, tangible collections and traditional lectures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.

Additional Information

The role requires occasional evening and weekend working.

This role requires frequent travel in and around southeast Wales, with occasional travel to other parts of Wales.

As the officer will be working regularly with children and vulnerable adults, this role requires an enhanced DBS check – this will be arranged and paid for by the Trust.
