Archaeology South-East is part of UCL – a global multidisciplinary university with a diverse community and progressive approach to teaching and research. As part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology, research and learning are at our core - and we want you to work with us to continue delivering on this mission.

We take pride in delivering high quality project outcomes for our clients, working hard to maximise research and public benefit from development-led fieldwork. We work for a range of people supporting development and infrastructure projects as well as heritage management. Our large team provides a comprehensive range of services and areas of specialist expertise, so there are plenty of people to learn from as your career in archaeology progresses.

About the role

We are currently recruiting for projects running from our office in Witham, Essex as we have several new projects starting or increasing in scale, including excavations on a Roman settlement and cemetery site near Chelmsford and an Iron Age site in Billericay as well as numerous evaluation projects. We require additional field archaeologists to excavate and record archaeological features and deposits and collect artefacts and samples. There are opportunities for immediate starts with minimum initial contract length of six months+ and with excellent prospects for contract extensions as work progresses. Whilst we have local work coming up, staff are sometimes required to undertake stay away work.

You will have a degree in Archaeology (or a related discipline) and some fieldwork experience that may include time working on development-led projects. We are particularly keen on recruiting staff based in Essex and preference will be given to those based locally (long-term stay away accommodation for our current projects is not available). Holding a driving license and being willing to drive for work is also highly desirable.
