The Role

Following the retirement of our current archaeologist, we are seeking our next Cathedral Archaeologist as a contracted consultant.

The work of the Cathedral Archaeologist is a statutory role as set out in the Care of Cathedrals Measure 2011. 

The new Cathedral Archaeologist will be responsible for the archaeological remains in and around the grade 1 listed Cathedral building, its estate and precinct, and is required to provide an annual report to Chapter.

The  successful applicant will be/have the following knowledge, experience, membership and key responsibilities which includes:

  • Membership of the Chaffered Institute for Archaeologists
  • Excellent knowledge of the ecclesiastical and secular legislative and planning framework as it pertains to archaeology
  • Proven experience in the survey and analysis of historic buildings and archaeological sites, with essential experience and competence in church archaeology.
  • Proven experience of working successfully in an archaeological curatorial capacity.
  • Familiarity and capability with standard and relevant specialised IT packages and a willingness to leam Cathedral systems and portals currently used.
  • Has published academical repots, field journals and major syntheses with the Royal Archaeological Institute "The Archaeological Journal" or on any other relevant journal portal.
